The Hario V60 coffee dripper comes in three different sizes labeled 01, 02, and 03. Each category brews a different amount of coffee, with 01 being the smallest and 03 the largest.
Each dripper series comes in a range of different materials, including plastic, ceramic, metal, glass, and even copper.
What Is V60 Size?
The V60 coffee dripper comes in three standard sizes—the 01 is the smallest, designed for brewing single cups. The 02 is slightly larger, with the capacity to brew around 300ml to 600ml of coffee. The largest dripper is the 03, which can brew around six cups of coffee at one time.
What is the Difference Between a V60 01, V60 02, and V60 03?
The main distinction between all the different categories of V60 is their size.
Each category of V60 offers is a different size and, therefore, can brew more coffee. 01 is the smallest, with its maximum capacity being a single cup of around 200-250ml. A 02 can brew about 300ml to 600ml. While an 03 can hold even more and can be used to brew anywhere between one to six cups of coffee,
Aside from their size distinctions, each V60 comes in an assortment of different materials. These include ceramic, plastic, stainless steel, and glass.
Each design comes with positives and negatives. Plastic V60s are more durable, making them easier to transport and ideal for taking with you on holiday. Glass and ceramic V60s have a more elegant and equitable design but are more fragile and less equipped to handle travel.
Will the Size Affect My Brewing Methods?
While an increase or decrease in the size of your dripper won’t require a massive change in how you brew coffee, you may have to tweak your brewing technique slightly.
Naturally, with an increase in size comes an adjustment to your pouring speed. With more water being needed in the same time frame, you will have to pour faster. The reverse is true if you are downscaling from large quantities to a single cup.
These adjustments are relatively minor and will require no significant changes in how you brew your coffee; it is just something that you need to be aware of.
What Are V60s Made of?
V60s come in a variety of different materials. Plastic and ceramics are the two most common materials used to make V60s.
These materials are relatively cheap and make for a great starter brewing for people looking to get into pour-over coffee.
Hario also has a wide range of stainless steel and glass V60s; they even have a copper dripper. Glass V60s come in all varying sizes, while the metal drippers are used for small brewing purposes, only available in 01 and 02 sizes.
How Do These Materials Impact my Brewing?
The primary way the material of your V60 impacts your brewing is its thermal mass.
Thermal mass refers to how much heat a material needs to absorb for its temperature to increase. Materials such as plastic and stainless steel have a low thermal mass. They heat up more quickly, making it easier for coffee to remain at a high temperature during brewing.
Ceramic and glass filters have a higher thermal mass. They take longer to reach the same temperatures and draw more heat away from the coffee while brewing.
Temperature plays a crucial role in determining extraction when brewing. The materials used to brew coffee can impact its overall taste.
What Filters Do I Need?
Hario offers its own range of paper filters for its coffee drippers. Each filter paper comes with a corresponding number that matches the drippers. For example, if you have a 01, you will want 01 filter papers, the same for 02 and 03.
These filters are made in different areas of the world and do have some minor impact on brewing. However, much of that is negated by pre-wetting filter papers before brewing.
Can I Use Other Filter Papers for my V60?
While it is possible to use any other cone filter papers when using your V60, it is not recommended.
Most other cone filters are not designed to fit a V60. They could be too big or too small. It introduces another variable when brewing your coffee. A variable that is easily eliminated by using Hario filter papers.
For the best results when using a V60, it is recommended that you use the corresponding filter paper to match the size of your V60.
What is the Meaning of V60?
V60 gets its name from the design of the coffee dripper. Shaped is a V-shaped cone with angles at 60 degrees.
The 60-degree V-shaped design offers optimum extraction, with the inner sides of the dripper lined with ridges that allow for greater airflow during brewing.
How is a V60 Measured?
When deciding what series of V60 is best for you, you want to have a rough idea of how much coffee you will be brewing in one go. So how do you measure how much coffee you are brewing?
Like all coffee brewing, V60 brewing operates on a water to coffee ratio. In the case of a V60, a 16:1 water to coffee ratio is a good starting point. For example, if you had 19g of coffee, you would require 300ml of water.
What Size V60 Should I Buy?
Before buying a V60 coffee dripper, there are many factors that you should consider.
The first is how much coffee you are looking to brew. Are you a fan off pour-over looking to a single cup? Or are you part of a large office and looking to brew multiple cups simultaneously? You can decide whether you’re better going with an 02 or 03.
Then ask yourself what matters to you when brewing coffee. If you’re constantly on the go and looking not to spend $5 on Starbucks every day, maybe you want a plastic V60 that is lightweight, inexpensive, and portable. If you value design and quality that fits your elegant kitchen’s decor, then a glass or ceramic V60 is your best option. If you’re an experienced pour-over brewer with little kitchen space, fork out the extra cash for a metal dripper.
Ultimately you need to figure out what matters to you most before picking a V60 that is right for you.
Hi, I’m Jen Williams, chief editor and writer for ThirstPerk.com.
I’ve been drinking coffee and tea for most of my life, but it wasn’t until I started working at Thirstperk.com that I became an expert on the subject. I’m a total caffeine addict who has spent hours upon hours reading about and experimenting with the different types of coffees out there in my search to find the perfect cup of joe.
I’ve been a tea lover for as long as I can remember as well. I grew up in a house with a mom who loved to drink herbal tea, and I think that’s where my love for tea first began. These days, I’m always on the lookout for new and interesting teas to try, and I love experimenting with different brewing methods and flavoring combinations.
